European Spallation Source

In 2009, Lund in Skåne was chosen as the site for the building of the European Spallation Source (ESS), a multidisciplinary scientific research centre harnessing the world’s most powerful neutron source.

Together with the Max IV synchrotrone source, ESS will constitute a world-leading European centre for materials research.

When operational in 2019, this state of the art technological device will enable researchers to study the materials of everyday life in all their rich diversity – from plastics and proteins to medicines and molecules – in order to understand how they are built up and how they work.

Lund, Skåne and indeed the Öresund region were selected for their:

  • Excellent conditions for attracting the world's best researchers
  • Several distinguished universities
  • Broad research-based commercial and industrial scene
  • Well-developed infrastructure
  • English-speaking population
  • Cutting-edge research within biotechnology and nano-science

Sustainable Research for a Sustainable Future

ESS will set a new standard for international research facilities in terms of environmental sustainability. The field of research to be carried out at ESS, materials science, is in itself a condition for success in achieving this. The three core values of ESS are expressed in: Scientific Excellence, Environmental Responsibility and Corporate Social Care.
